HUMAN WASTE MANAGEMENT
Human waste disposal in innocuous form is an ever growing problem leading to aesthetic nuisance, threat of organic pollution & several infectious diseases in epidemic proportions due to contamination of ground water and drinking water resources in highly populated and developing countries, like India. Less than 30% of Indians have access to the toilets. In rural areas about 10% of houses have toilets and rest of the people go to open defecation. Untreated waste is responsible for several diseases like, dysentery, diarrhoea, amoebiasis, viral hepatitis, cholera, typhoid etc. taking the life of lakhs of children annually.
WASTE MANAGEMENT
Proper disposal of human waste is important. Leaving human waste in natural areas can result in contaminated water supplies and soils, and lead to diseases such as Giardia. Human faeces carry harmful micro-organisms that easily contaminate water sources. Cold climate areas in particular slow the decomposition process and accentuate the problems of human waste accumulation. Giardia is a parasite which can survive in cold water and is spread as a result of poorly disposed toilet waste. It infects the intestines, causing chronic diarrhoea, nausea, stomach cramps, and dehydration.
EFFECTS OF MANAUAL SCAVENGING
The 2011 Census data of our country showed that 24.6 crore households in India had 26 lakh insanitary toilets and around 1,80,657 people were engaged in manual scavenging for a living. The labourers endure side-effects like constant nausea and headaches, respiratory and skin diseases, anaemia and carbon monoxide poisoning.
BIO TOILETS
Bio-Toilet is an innovative technology for disposal of solid human waste in an eco-friendly, economical and hygienic manner. Human waste disposal in high altitude and low temp areas, Moving Railway coaches, Buses, Big Cities, Mines, remote areas, Beaches, Rural areas, long distance buses is a burning problem. This technology is suitable for any area/ application in India. The process under this technology culminates in to treated effluent which is free from pathogens and is also environmentally acceptable.
The techniques involves technology that can breakdown organic waste using micro-organisms like bacteria. It degrades and converts human waste into water and gasses in an eco-friendly manner. The gas thus produced can be utilized for generating energy or for cooking and the water can be used for irrigation purposes.
